I was supposed to be away this weekend on a woman's retreat but things change so fast, for a million reasons which maybe I will blog about one day, we ended up being almost prisoners in our own home.
I had forgotten to give one of the other organisers one of the gifts that needed to be handed out, so drove through on Saturday afternoon and had lunch with everyone to drop them off. it really broke my heart knowing I should have been there with everyone..........
But when I look back now I realise that it was in the trip there and back that I learnt the lesson that I was supposed to learn this weekend..............
As I was driving the scenery was amazing.................... alternating between undulating hills and grass plains at one point along the road there were horses taking a bath in a farm dam, , running through the water it almost looked like they were splashing one another.
Then there were cows grazing without a worry in the world, calm, peaceful, everything they needed right there, grass from the veld and water from the stream, what else did they need, a life uncomplicated by relationships, possessions, anger, lies, hurt...........
Then I noticed the veld grass in full flower there white tips blowing in the breeze looking like waves of white foam, being thrown backwards and forwards huge pockets of grass moving almost as it they were alive and trying to reach out for something, straining to reach into the unknown, fields of yellow and purple flowers, who even though we had not yet had rain had erupted into fields of colour waiting knowing, having absolute faith that the rain would come..
When we went to go and look at the place a month ago to see what we needed to take with us on the retreat, there were entire fields where the veld had been ravaged by fire, but driving along today the unburnt sections, the brown grasses looked dusty, and old but the places that had been destroyed by the fire, had sprouted into luscious fields, bright green in there newness, without a drop of rain having fallen, the grass and flowers didn't wait for rain, it didn't wait for lower temperatures, just in case it got burnt in the son, it did what came naturally it renewed its life, in faith looking forward to Gods provision of rain.
During lunch the wind came up and the sky began to darken and there was a promise of rain in the air at last ......... on the way home the wind was blowing and at a particularly isolated part of the trip and with only a few cows grazing in the field, and as my sister said later, they probably thought I was just another cow with "Mad Cow Disease" I got out of the car and I screamed................. yep............. screamed.............. screamed until my throat hurt............ screamed until i had released all the hate and bitterness inside me.............. screamed to God for help............ screamed for my lost life.............. screamed for my lost love........................ and as I got back into the car a peace came over me....... and I knew that I was going to okay, that we were going to be okay ................ we were walking safely wrapped in Gods arms, protection and love ............... all I needed was to trust in Him, like the flowers, like the grasses, like the cows................
As we sat on my beloved verandah later that afternoon the wind started to blow, and we could hear the storm getting closer and closer, the promise of the first Highveld Storm, becoming more and more promising, the lightning echoed through the valley and it was like the entire world was waiting, waiting with baited breath to see if this was finally it, everything to scared to move, to scared to make a noise in case something scared it off, there was completed silence while we waited............ and as I sat and watched the Syringa tree in the garden, covered in sweet smelling purple flowers blowing in the wind, at that moment for me, it looked as if its branches where waving in praise, praising God, for the fullfillment of his promise............. and then we could hear the rain coming as it started pounding on the roof tops, and then it was our turn, I ran into the rain, ran to wash myself of the past.......................
This morning as I sit and blog on my verandah everything looks clean, everything looks fresh, the grass is almost dry and it is only 6 in the morning, everything was just so thirsty, ......... the birds are singing............ and all is well with the world............... all is well with my world.............................. you see this weekend I learnt the lesson......... I am not in control of my life God is......... and i need to just have FAITH
A journey into changing who you are, so you can find true peace with your life

Sea, Sand and Sun
This is a long weekend for us, Tuesday is a public holiday so we took a days leave on Monday and headed for the ocean..............
We were up at 3.30am and on the road for 4.30 am, my family thought I had lost my mind, but the earlier we arrived the more time we would have exploring...... for most of the journey it was drizzling with rain, the first two hours were really dark.... with only the twinkle of a farm house light breaking the darkness............ the dawn broke just after 6 o'clock, but with the rain it really did little to improve the driving conditions.
The roads were full of trucks, and we saw a couple of bad accidents involving trucks the drivers had obviously fallen asleep at the wheel and lost control as no other vehicles were involved. Van Reenens Pass at the foot of the Drakensberg was covered in mist.... and I must admit...... rain and mist make for a scary trip.............. I was worried that the rain would follow us all the 550 kilometers to the sea, but about 500 kilometers away from home the rain stopped. As we took the South Coast road and headed for the flat we had hired, we landed in the middle of approx. 100 Harley Davidson motorbikes that were on the way to a rally............. as if we had not had a stressful enough trip. On a three lane highway they decided to use the middle lane, driving two a breast each on the white line, it made driving very dangerous, and I held my breath every time we passed one and they have the cheek to say that cars are not considerate enough............
In spite of everything we arrived safe and sound, off loaded our bags, had a cup of tea and headed for the beach ............... there is something about the ocean............ that is relaxing and cleansing............... it helps to put things back in to perspective, clears the mind and warms the . spirit..................... even though the waves were really high and the ocean was just white with the force of the waves breaking, all the no swimming signs were up as the currents were just too strong............. we took a walk up the beach for an ice cream ........ after which we discovered we would have to come back the long scenic route via the road as the tide had come in, and the river we had crossed was now one with the sea............
Had a lazy afternoon, reading.............. the 4.30 start really affecting everyone............ and then we went out for supper, good food good company.......... what an amazing day one of our long weekend............................

The "Grand Canyon" long drop
Of all the destructive natural forces there are, water must be the most destructive, fire can be put out, wind damage avoided by battening down the hatches so to speak, but water you cannot control, you cannot stop it, cannot redirect it it has a will and a power all of its own.
We over the past two months have had more than our share of rain, it is almost like someone, somewhere turned on the tap, and has just forgotten to switch it off, so right now i think most of us in Gauteng are at water over load .................
A few weeks ago I blogged about a "puddle" we have in our garden, well a friend of mine said something along the lines that from the photo it was just a "puny" little puddle, and well looking at the photo I suppose she has a point, what I didn't mention was that the picture had been taken some time after the storm, and so the water had begun to sink into the ground already, but here is a photo of the puddle right after the storm .
See best friend it is almost a minature dam ..............
This "little" dam is however not the only "addition " to our garden because of the rain ...... we have another interesting addition. Our house is just over 100 years old and at sometime in its historical past it must have had a long drop toilet just outside the back door, obviously the people did not want to walk far to do the "deed" ........... nor did they want to get wet when it was raining when they really had the "need".. ........... so they put this long drop almost right outside the back door.
With all this rain we noticed that the ground had begun to look a little concave, by about day 3 of the continual rain, the ground had dropped about 30cm, and by about day 5 we were at about a metre, and at about day 7 the whole was deep enough for our labrador, to jump into and you could not see him at all because of the depth of the hole.
Now my mind began to "work" overtime, how long is a long drop, how much can this new garden addition "grand canyon" still drop.............. do we dig down and have a look before we fill
it ........................ what kind of treasures would we find down there.... i mean just think of all the things that you have thrown down the toilet, not to mention what you have accidentally lost down the toilet, the jewelry, the false teeth, the cell phones .............
By now my imagination was at full throttle, what if a serial killer had lived in this house, and all the bodies had been thrown in there and we would find all the bones ........ what at times when the house was occupied someone or something had fallen down the hole and now because of the "toxic" waste that was down there have become super strong and just waiting like the Genie in Alladdin to be let loose on an unsuspecting world ........... what if a miserly previous owner had used it as a storage area for all his millions .................................. what if the missing Kruger Rands are buried down that hole ..................... and what if................... what if it is just a long drop ..................

Vaal Dam
On Saturday my family and I took a drive out to the Vaal Dam Wall, 14 sluice gates were open, the first time in 15 years that so many sluice gates have been open all at once, as we approached the dam we were amazed at just how full the dam was, places where we have sat and had picnics, were completed submerged by the water, the launch pads for the boats which are normally a nightmare to reverse down because of the distance to the water edge, have disappeared under the ever rising dam, due completely by the pure volume of rain that has fallen over the past 2 months. In some places the dam was lapping at the roads edge, something I have never seen before.
From far you could see the mist created by the water pouring out of the dam wall at a rate of over 100 000 litres per second into the Vaal River, but nothing could prepare you for the beauty of the falling water, the white water gushing out of the walls, like a garden water fall, but a million times bigger and a billions times more water, as the water hit the river bed, it exploded into a white cloud of water that sent the water flying metres up into the air.............. the noise level was amazing as the water thundered out of the middle of the wall ....................beautiful ...........
The normal slow flowing Vaal River was an enormous raging river of about 5 times its normal width, and flowing so fast that it had already taken with it, most of the vegetation on the sides, as well as all the fencing which ran across a small workers road which was just under the bridge we were standing on.
As you looked down stream, you could see the garden lapa's of the houses close to the river and all that was showing was the thatched roofs, and it made you realise why there had been so much flooding down steam, how hundreds of houses were underwater and the water was still rising.
But watching the force of the water also made me think of something else .............. some of the willow trees that were now almost fully submerged were fighting against the flow of the water, fighting against the onslaught of the volume of the water, it made me realise as Christians that is what we need to do we need to stand firm in our Christianity against the world, against all that we know is not right, against all the temptations that are daily put in our paths, if that thin little willow tree can do it then we should really have no trouble at all ..................and certainly not a single excuse that i can think of ........................

Rain
RAIN RAIN GO AWAY COME BACK ANOTHER DAY, RAIN RAIN GO AWAY COME BACK ANOTHER DAY, RAIN RAIN GO AWAY COME BACK ANOTHER DAYI know that we need the rain, i know that for us to have water in our taps we need the rain, i know the farmers need the rain for their crops to grow, i know that for us to have bread, meat eggs, lovely fruit and vegetables to eat we need the rain ..............but for all the rain to fall over one place, is, just hard to understand ................. and i wouldn't even try, because i know that God is in control, and everything is for a purpose and i would not wish, or pray it away, i know there is a reason for us having so much .rain ........... but it would be nice if possible ........ that the rain went somewhere else for a few days .................there are places in the country that are on water restrictions, i have just come back from the Eastern Cape and they are desperate for rain, everything there is dry, and brown, the dams have dried up and they are bringing in water for the animals, but here, here, the washing is beginning to pour out of the bathroom every time you open the door, the washing basket was flashing red days ago, washing overload ....... washing overload ......... some clothes are on there 4th wash they are definitely the cleanest whites and the brightest colours anywhere ............. and the there is the garden, we no longer have gardens we have jungles, you can no longer go for a walk around your garden because the grass in now up to your knees and who knows in this jungle what wild animals are lurking there ............... what bugs have mutated into man eaters, the mosquito's now no longer have to sneak in for attacks in the middle of the night, they just fly in and carry you away they are so big ................. and they buzz around in flocks with noice levels so high it is impossible to sleep ......................
There are puddles everywhere, we have had a minor "dam" in our garden for over a month, right in the middle of the garden, the dog uses it as his paw washing area, just to make sure that his paws are really "clean" before he charges into the house down the passage on the carpets, into the kitchen on the beige tiles, if he was a horse i am sure that he would roll in it, he just loves water, the cars use the mass of water to "clean" there tyres on, so the grass is full of ugly brown tyre marks which serve as a remined of the mud every where two ugly lines reminding us that we really do need to pave the driveway " one day" and the mosquito's ............... yes the mosquito's use it as there breeding ground for there new recruits .............
I am just waiting in anticipation for the ducks to arrive................
We really need some sun, it is funny how the constant rain just has a negative impact on your frame of mind, it also make you realise how much we take the sun for granted, we just know that it is going to be there every morning, to keep us warm, and i am not talking "heat" wise, i am talking keep us warm in our hearts, because it is so much easier to get through a bad day when the sun is shining down on you .........
And those sunsets ................................ oh how i miss those sunsets .........come back sun all is forgiven we miss you ........... we need you ............... we love you ....................
