I love a good storm, there is nothing more scary or more beautiful than a Highveld storm, and tonight we had one that would have made any Mother or Father proud................
When I arrived home from work it was a beautiful Autumn afternoon..... and within an hour the sky started to change, you could almost smell the approaching storm, you could feel the electricity in the air, you could almost hear the grass chanting rain, rain, rain, desperate for water after the heat of the last few days.
The birds were quiet in silent anticipation of the storm that was to come, rushing to get home lest they be caught in the deluge of rain that is a Highveld storm.......... the sky is pitch black , in a semi circle all around us, ahead the setting sun, behind is as dark as night, it was almost as if someone had drawn a line across the sky, a line that showed where the storm starts and where it ends, it is almost if someone had decided this far and no further. ..................
As I watch the darkness approach, the sky is decorated with a filigree of white streaks, like an antique lace, beautiful in its design, and yet scary at how quickly it can destroy or be destroyed, the sky is a tapestry of white , two...... three ....... four ........ forks at a time, nature at its most beautiful and its most deadly..................
The wind began to blow, and everything that is not bolted down, takes on a life of its own, it is tossed backwards and forwards, papers being dragged upwards, leaves and branches being swept up in its strength, as though they are as light as a feather as the wind gathered momentum, as the storm got closer and closer.........................
And then the thunder arrives, great rolling drums of thunder, never ending, counting one thousand.... two thousand......... three thousand to see how far away the storm is.................. 3 kilometers and closing, closing fast............. and then it is all around us the heaven open.......... pouring, thousands and thousands of raindrops on to us, no respite, no compassion................
And then within minutes it is over, its fury spend, and as I look up beyond the storm, I see the setting sun glimmering behind the rain cloud, shining like a halo.................. shining in its promise that tomorrow is another day, a chance to start again, ........ Life is good....................
Wow! That is incredible! Beautiful photos! Scary storm!
ReplyDeleteImpressive photos and description! I'm not fond of those types of storms but I'm glad you got through it fine and I'm sure the rain is a welcomed relief!
