What a really great day I had on Saturday, ......... I took part in a " fun" car rally, not your normal having to race around tracks at break neck speeds, not where you were given a map and had to find the end destination, but one where you had to actually go slow take note of your surrounds, you had to observe everything you saw, and answer questions about it .............
My daughters deserted me this weekend, one to a friends house for the weekend, and one to a scrap booking lesson for the day, which is her passion, so I was allocated one of the youth from the church to drive with me, and I picked up my friends little girl who was at home, because her mom was working, she is 11 and she never stopped asking questions........ we had to explain everything we did..... and everything we said.......... and on top of that she was a recording manic......... so everything we said and did was recorded, forever a record of everything that happened on the trip ............. thank goodness I only had two "near misses" ......... and the other one was 20, he has the voice of an angel but was obviously saving it for church on Sunday......... the three of us together made for a very noisy, unusual and interesting afternoon.
I arrived first at the starting point ( like that is anything unusual) and when we were ready to start the race, the organisers said I could go first, since I had arrived first .............. this created some mumbling from a certain person who incidently had arrived last ................. but who I love dearly, he is so competitive it should have been his middle name............. it was agreed we would then put our names in the hat and pull the order of starting out that way....................... I confidently informed everyone that my name would be pulled out first......................... and it was ................. our minister asked how I got that right ......... it is so cool having friends in High places...............
And we were off..................... well I am not sure whether I am going deaf or whether my navigator is going through that phase in his life where his voice is breaking, or whether he really was saving it for the choir on Sunday, but it was tough going........ we had to keep on going back because he read the clues so quietly and slowly that by the time he was finished ......... we had already past the place......... we had already missed the turnoff.............. we had already gone over the stop street......................
We had to count parking spots between shops in a shopping centre......... we had to count eggs on someone's pottery artwork on the wall of their house .......... we had to go into shops and ask for the prices of toasted sandwiches................. at end of phase one we had to build a puzzle......... we had to write down phone numbers of tow services, fire departments, farms, we had to write down what animals shops sold, we had to read the writing on shop walls, we had to count traffic offices on bill boards.......... at the end of phase two we had to find a receipe for a Mancurian Pizza in a pile of magazines............ we then had a chance for some bonus points where we had to remember things along the road, that we had seen like how much the toll road costs for trucks ........ and we had to recognise people in pictures with their faces distorted................
It was great fun, we ended up at a huge farm, and had a braai, and some amazing fellowship, it was great fun.............. We didn't win ....... no kidding............. but I have not laughed so much in ages ................ Can't wait until next year Wayne ............. Life is GOOD
This sounds like a great day. Someone spent a lot of time setting up the course and clues. I'm inspired to think of something like this for an outing with the kids.
