Of all the destructive natural forces there are, water must be the most destructive, fire can be put out, wind damage avoided by battening down the hatches so to speak, but water you cannot control, you cannot stop it, cannot redirect it it has a will and a power all of its own.
We over the past two months have had more than our share of rain, it is almost like someone, somewhere turned on the tap, and has just forgotten to switch it off, so right now i think most of us in Gauteng are at water over load .................
A few weeks ago I blogged about a "puddle" we have in our garden, well a friend of mine said something along the lines that from the photo it was just a "puny" little puddle, and well looking at the photo I suppose she has a point, what I didn't mention was that the picture had been taken some time after the storm, and so the water had begun to sink into the ground already, but here is a photo of the puddle right after the storm .
See best friend it is almost a minature dam ..............
This "little" dam is however not the only "addition " to our garden because of the rain ...... we have another interesting addition. Our house is just over 100 years old and at sometime in its historical past it must have had a long drop toilet just outside the back door, obviously the people did not want to walk far to do the "deed" ........... nor did they want to get wet when it was raining when they really had the "need".. ........... so they put this long drop almost right outside the back door.
With all this rain we noticed that the ground had begun to look a little concave, by about day 3 of the continual rain, the ground had dropped about 30cm, and by about day 5 we were at about a metre, and at about day 7 the whole was deep enough for our labrador, to jump into and you could not see him at all because of the depth of the hole.
Now my mind began to "work" overtime, how long is a long drop, how much can this new garden addition "grand canyon" still drop.............. do we dig down and have a look before we fill
it ........................ what kind of treasures would we find down there.... i mean just think of all the things that you have thrown down the toilet, not to mention what you have accidentally lost down the toilet, the jewelry, the false teeth, the cell phones .............
By now my imagination was at full throttle, what if a serial killer had lived in this house, and all the bodies had been thrown in there and we would find all the bones ........ what at times when the house was occupied someone or something had fallen down the hole and now because of the "toxic" waste that was down there have become super strong and just waiting like the Genie in Alladdin to be let loose on an unsuspecting world ........... what if a miserly previous owner had used it as a storage area for all his millions .................................. what if the missing Kruger Rands are buried down that hole ..................... and what if................... what if it is just a long drop ..................
Really good blog i know the feeling
