As I sit here this morning and watch the sunrise over the Kruger Park, I realise how I have been blessed by this experience, the dawn is breaking slowly, there is just a fraction of light that seems to grow and grow, almost as thought someone is forcing the night to recede and the day to take its place, it is almost as though nature is reluctant to start another day, as though it is fighting the dawn, wanting to hold on the the cool and quiet of the night.Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself. (Leo Tolstoi)
As I, sit in the darkness, because you cannot have the outside light on, without the inside light coming on as well , which means my sleeping princess would then wake up, so am writing this blog at about 4.30am, as I am busy typing this blog the bats are dive bombing me like kamakazi pilots attracted by the light of the computer screen, hoping to catch a last insect in its light before it beds down, or should I say "hangs" down for the evening
I get a fright as an elephant trumpets close by a loud majestic sound, a joyful sound, joy at the breaking of the dawn, a joy at being able to live another day, a sound of knowing where you are, where you come from and where you are going to ................ a sound nothing like my neighbor who has just woken up, and let one rip.......... which would have given any elephant a run for his money and would have registered at least a 9.5 on the Richter Scale.......................... obviously he did not see me typing here in the darkness ........... obviously .....................
I can hear the elephant as he pushes through the bush, breaking branches off the trees in his bid to feed its enormous frame, I can hear him in the darkness somewhere .......
As the day becomes lighter and lighter, I can hear the animals moving restlessly in the grass around the camp, I can't see them as the bush is so dense, they are so well hidden in this half light, but I know they are there the moving off the grass and the occasional call of an animal in the distance, reminds me I am truly in the bush, truly a part or the Creators Kingdom.
Close by is the low rumbling sound of the King of the Jungle the lion, as he realises that that the night is fading away and his advantage to capture his supper is fast becoming something he will have to leave until this new day is over, supper will have to wait until tonight.
As I look up as the light begins to improve, as the day slowly stretches itself in the distance, I see about 20 metres away an enormous bull elephant, with his tusks almost reaching to the ground, what a magnificent creature, so massive the biggest by far that we have seen this trip, but yet so gentle as he slowly walks through the grass almost as though he is afraid................ afraid he might stand on something and hurt it, I sit and imagine the stories that he could tell, the changes he has seen, the beauty of Gods creation that he has witnessed..............
A flock of tiny birds fly past causing a rippling of the wind a they pass , they are obviously on a mission on their way to gather food and water, it is almost as if they have been divided into squadrons, as one group after the other, fly past in a flurry of beating wings, all leaving in exactly the same direction....... never ending squadron after squadron fly out into the breaking dawn.
As I watch the elephant a family of giraffe move into sight, one, two, three, four munching at the tops of the trees, their undulating walk, one of grace and beauty, never appearing to rush knowing that they have the whole day ahead of them, they have survived the perils of the darkness another day is born........................
A vervet monkey just runs past jumping into the tree next to me, he can't cross the fence because it is electrified, so like a tight rope walker he uses the telephone lines, balances with all fours on one stand and using his tale as the balance on the other strand..........
As the sun gets higher it reflects off the trees, and one by one the Impala reappear............ slowly browsing, one minute there is a herd the next minute something moves in the grass and the whole herd take off as one ...................... they will not be the lions supper today .....................
And then a worker comes through the bush with his lunch box in his hand ................................ only in Africa...........................................
