I wonder how many arguments this invention has caused ................. I wonder how many ruined holidays can be directly linked to this piece of modern technology............... I wonder how many people have had raised blood pressure or self combusted because of this small little piece of metal.
Last week we went to the Kruger National Park for the weekend, and my eldest daughter let us use her Garmin, apparently........ something that we are still to discover, it is great in the park is shows all the hides, the dams, the roads....... just not the animals which is a pity because they are sometimes really hard to find, maybe someone can invent a heat seeking Garmin that can show where there is life out there in the bush, because sometimes we went for kilometers without seeing anything............
When we left home we put on the Garmin, and were on our way, estimated time of arrival in the Kruger Park was 3.45pm........ great we could get in a bit of sight seeing, ample time to get to the camp, which closes its gates at 6.30pm.......... no problem..................haha.
My "better half" however decides to take a "shortcut" that he knows ............. which obviously is a national secret because the Garmin is completely unaware of its existance............... it will take time off the trip, he said, and better than that you would not have to pay any of the toll fees , he said ............ well the Garmin did not like the way we were going, at every intersection she would tell us to go left, go left, and every time "the man" went straight it would add another 15 minutes on to our arrival time..... go left........... 4.00pm ......... recalculating .......... go left ......... 4.15pm.......... recalculating..............go left 4.35pm........ recalculating............. go left 4,45pm........... recalculating ............ go left ........ 5.20pm......... recalculating ............ at that point in time if my daughter and I had heard that female tell us once more to go left we would have imploded, so we switched off the Garmin, accompanied by raised voices, remarks about negativity, and lets go home rather..........
It would appear that we are lucky enough to have the only Garmin in the world that lies ...............
yep.... bottom line that female has no idea where she is going .......... and her timing is all
out ............it is impossible when you are taking the "shortcut" for it to take longer, I am wondering whether we can sue the voice who gives the directions, for making his "shortcut" take longer.
We eventually arrived at the park,at 5.15pm we had to go in at a different gate than we had intended because the Crocodile River Bridge was flooded, and we were staying in that camp, so we had a 90 minute trip to our camp .......... no problem............
NOW he decides to use the Garmin to find our way to the camp.................. well after an hours trip, in which we saw rhino, elephant and lots of buck..... we arrived ............. back at our starting point the Garmin had taken us in a circle...................
We now had 30 minutes to reach the camp before the gates closed........ impossible, we phoned ahead and got permission to be late, what a trip, we saw leopard, we saw elephant , we saw rhino, it was almost as though every animal in the park was conspiring against us to make us late, I mean how can you just drive past a leopard you had to stop and take photo's and watch..........
Just when we thought it could not get better..........there was lion in the road 20 metres from the gate to our camp .................... thanks to the Garmin's wrong programming we had seen 4 of the big 5 in one hour ........
We never used the Garmin again, and on the way home, we used the national roads, and paid the toll fees ...................... I paid the toll fees .............. he wanted to use the short cut again..............

Cat and Mouse
I'm a brave , brave mouse I go marching round the house
And I'm not afraid of anything. For danger I'm prepared,
And I'm never scared, Never sacred?
No!
I'm not afraid of anything.
by Betty Misheiker
This morning when I got up, Peroni was in mouse catching mode underneath the bookshelf in the passage, after very careful investigation I realised that the mouse had gone behind the bookshelf and was hovering in no mans land between the wall and the shelf.
It was one of those candid camera moments never to be repeated ......as I moved the bookshelf the mouse dropped, I ran screaming, jumped on the bed just in case the mouse attacked me ........
I mean it was all of 6 cm long and a wild animal .......... okay i am scared of mice ...... all hell broke loose, as books and ornaments went flying in all directions the war between cat and mouse was on ........ as I stood on the bed I could only imagine from the noise what was going on, but I was sure... that the one I was backing to win this "Cat versus Mouse" contest would be victorious .........and then there was silence ..............
When I was sure that both cat and mouse were gone, I ventured from my place of safety on top of the bed feeling ridiculous I mean we are talking mouse here........... I carefully tiptoed through the house and checked for signs of cat or dead mouse nothing ............
As I came onto the veranda there was the cat with the mouse in its mouth, wanting to bring it back inside as a present for me .............. I never realised how cruel cats are I always assumed that when they have caught their pray they killed it and ate it....... but to day I learnt that is not so, Peroni turned into a stadisic killier, he tormented this mouse so much I changed who I was routing for, if it tried to escape he would catch in and then throw it up in the air, then he would let it think it had a chance to escape and just as it took off , to what it thought was freedom, then he would grab it again, returning it always to the same place.......
This made me think how we humans are like this, how sometimes we are the cat and sometimes we are the mouse................. how easily we let those who are stronger than us take over our lives, take over what we do, what we wear, how we talk, how we think and in a lot of cases who we are ........................ .which leave me with a problem do I want to be a cat or a mouse.................... am I a cat or a mouse ..................

Woman only
Today was the day, that all woman dread, that all woman have nightmares about, that all woman put off until the 11th hour, today was "Gynecologist Day"............. as it happens I really needed to go my hormone tablets were finished 7 days, 6 hours and 45 minutes ago, and i had already begun with the hot flushes, the night sweats, the lack of patience, the irritability .......... the nice me ....................
When you make the appointment you make it months in advance so that you will have loads of time to get used to the idea, but before you know it the day arrives.......... so you have an extra long bath in the morning making sure that all parts are good and clean and fresh ............tralala................. you choose clothes that are easy to get out of, and into, it almost sounds like you are off to meet a clandestine lover.
For me it has become a mother and daughter event my eldest daughter and I always go together, either she makes the appointment or I do, just to make sure that we keep our yearly appointment, according to the gynecologist my youngest daughter is not of age yet so she misses out on all the fun........
On the way to the event my eldest daughter asks me what hair style I have today, and at first I did not understand what she was talking about.................... and then the penny dropped and the conversation took a absurd turn, I think it had a lot to do with the nerves...........talk of needing a weed eater to get through the undergrowth, of short back and sides, of Brazilian and French and babies bum......................... definitely nerves ...............
We arrive with plenty of time to spare , and after having a 15 minute debate as to who was to go first, we decided to leave it in the hands of the very competent receptionist, who is obviously deaf, because she did not hear the phone ringing again and again and again and again and again .............. obviously multitasking is not one of her most admirable attributes............... honesty is also not one of her attributes because she assured me when I made the booking that we were the first appointments of the day ....... and surprise there was 3 people in front of us ????
Well I suppose that I would have been happy if being first came with a prize, but I was the chosen one I got to go first ............ lucky, lucky me....... my daughter always says so that i can see what kind of mood he is in so that she still has time to change her mind.
The gynecologist is really nice, very friendly, bald as a badger and never stops talking , he tells you to go into the changing room, and remove the bottom half of your carefully chosen wardrobe, and then to call him when you are decent................ how can you ever be decent with half of your clothes lying over a chair, your most private parts , covered with a blue floral sheet........ and your most private being, about to be invaded by a stranger ......................... well almost stranger .......
He does the deed, and then proceeds to show you, your bladder, your bowels .................... which he tells you are very full ............. like you didn't know that I am not so old that I have lost all feeling in the lower extremities of my body ...... WHO CARES......... you just want him to finish sooner than later would be much better.......
I ask him how long I need to come back for...... "Until I can't remember what i am looking for anymore .............................." he should have been a comedian.............
What seems like hours is in fact a few minutes, all is well, he asks me to get dressed, and then back to his office ......................... and you can start stressing all over again for your next years appointment............................................

Affirmative Shopping
Thou shalt not steal!!!!!
Yesterday I had the day off work, I had a number of errands to run, and was really tired after the weekend away, I had breakfast with an amazing lady, one of the many admirable people that I have the privilege of calling "friend", and had then planned to spend the afternoon with another really good friend who I have not seen in a while.
We had arranged to meet at 1 o'clock, so as I arrived at her house to pick her up, she and her husband had just arrived home from a morning of running errands, my timing was to say the least perfect, but then again it always is .....................
She popped inside quickly to go to the ladies, and the next minute we heard her shouting "We've been robbed"...................... my heart stopped, her husband and I rushed inside, unprepared for the absolute devastation we would find inside............
They had not been robbed, this was more that a robbery, their home had been violated, their home had been almost raped, by some unfeeling, uncaring, inhuman, beings ................... you cannot call them human, because no human is capable of the destruction that these "beings" caused, the rooms had been torn apart there was not a drawer or cupboard that had not been torn apart obviously looking for hidden firearms and money...........
The safe had been torn out of the wall, and in doing so the entire cupboard had been destroyed whole pieces of the wall, had been ripped off, the sides of the cupboard were reduced to splinters ....... the main bed room was almost inaccessible the passage littered with suitcases that had been discarded in their attempt to find the "Mother Lode"...........
Memories, pictures, artifacts gathered during years of marraige, family heirlooms, gone forever something that would mean nothing to the perpetrators of this crime, but which means a memory forever taken away from these amazing people........ camera's full of images that cannot be replaced taken ............ the cases of protection discarded like rubbish outside as they loaded there "shopping" into a waiting vehicle, a calculated well planned crime ...............
The inconvenience is mammoth .............. passports gone.......... birth certificates gone........... deeds to the house gone......... keys to every thing that has a lock, neatly labeled for use gone............. but more that that your security, your peace of mind , gone............ your ability to sleep gone ..............
The sad part is that, we are to blame, if no one would buy things "off the back of the truck" then there would be no market for crime, there would be no one to buy other peoples heirlooms, there would be no robbery there would be no crime ....................

Kruger Park
As I sit here this morning and watch the sunrise over the Kruger Park, I realise how I have been blessed by this experience, the dawn is breaking slowly, there is just a fraction of light that seems to grow and grow, almost as thought someone is forcing the night to recede and the day to take its place, it is almost as though nature is reluctant to start another day, as though it is fighting the dawn, wanting to hold on the the cool and quiet of the night.Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself. (Leo Tolstoi)
As I, sit in the darkness, because you cannot have the outside light on, without the inside light coming on as well , which means my sleeping princess would then wake up, so am writing this blog at about 4.30am, as I am busy typing this blog the bats are dive bombing me like kamakazi pilots attracted by the light of the computer screen, hoping to catch a last insect in its light before it beds down, or should I say "hangs" down for the evening
I get a fright as an elephant trumpets close by a loud majestic sound, a joyful sound, joy at the breaking of the dawn, a joy at being able to live another day, a sound of knowing where you are, where you come from and where you are going to ................ a sound nothing like my neighbor who has just woken up, and let one rip.......... which would have given any elephant a run for his money and would have registered at least a 9.5 on the Richter Scale.......................... obviously he did not see me typing here in the darkness ........... obviously .....................
I can hear the elephant as he pushes through the bush, breaking branches off the trees in his bid to feed its enormous frame, I can hear him in the darkness somewhere .......
As the day becomes lighter and lighter, I can hear the animals moving restlessly in the grass around the camp, I can't see them as the bush is so dense, they are so well hidden in this half light, but I know they are there the moving off the grass and the occasional call of an animal in the distance, reminds me I am truly in the bush, truly a part or the Creators Kingdom.
Close by is the low rumbling sound of the King of the Jungle the lion, as he realises that that the night is fading away and his advantage to capture his supper is fast becoming something he will have to leave until this new day is over, supper will have to wait until tonight.
As I look up as the light begins to improve, as the day slowly stretches itself in the distance, I see about 20 metres away an enormous bull elephant, with his tusks almost reaching to the ground, what a magnificent creature, so massive the biggest by far that we have seen this trip, but yet so gentle as he slowly walks through the grass almost as though he is afraid................ afraid he might stand on something and hurt it, I sit and imagine the stories that he could tell, the changes he has seen, the beauty of Gods creation that he has witnessed..............
A flock of tiny birds fly past causing a rippling of the wind a they pass , they are obviously on a mission on their way to gather food and water, it is almost as if they have been divided into squadrons, as one group after the other, fly past in a flurry of beating wings, all leaving in exactly the same direction....... never ending squadron after squadron fly out into the breaking dawn.
As I watch the elephant a family of giraffe move into sight, one, two, three, four munching at the tops of the trees, their undulating walk, one of grace and beauty, never appearing to rush knowing that they have the whole day ahead of them, they have survived the perils of the darkness another day is born........................
A vervet monkey just runs past jumping into the tree next to me, he can't cross the fence because it is electrified, so like a tight rope walker he uses the telephone lines, balances with all fours on one stand and using his tale as the balance on the other strand..........
As the sun gets higher it reflects off the trees, and one by one the Impala reappear............ slowly browsing, one minute there is a herd the next minute something moves in the grass and the whole herd take off as one ...................... they will not be the lions supper today .....................
And then a worker comes through the bush with his lunch box in his hand ................................ only in Africa...........................................

Staircases
“You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
-- Martin Luther King, Jr --
My "bestest" friend sent this quote to me the other day, and it really had an impact on me, it really got me thinking.............. it made me think of how much of our lives we spend looking for life, how much of our lives is spend chasing the "American Dream" ............... it made me realise how, we are so busy getting "more" of everything that we never stop, in fact I don't think that we know when to stop, I doubt that we even know how to stop................ how to take that first step to make our lives meaningful so that we can look back on them and truly say I had a great life.
Why is it that we are never happy with what we have, that we never fulfill that need for more, that no matter how much we have it is never enough, because someone, somewhere has more than us, so we push on trying to be bigger, better, thinner, funnier, we try to have more, have you ever stopped to wonder how much “more” is actually enough. Is there some flashing red light that comes on in our brain when we have reached “more” does the world come to a stand still, does the sun forget to shine and the moon forget to rise, all because you now have achieved the pinnacle of “more”.........................
Have you ever stopped to wonder how much your “more” is affecting your family, your job, your health, your relationships, how much your "more" is affecting you, what about how much your ‘more” is affecting the person your were predestined to become…………… do you miss becoming that person, because you never have the chance to find out who you actually are, you never took that first step up the staircase to find out who you really are inside .......................
We are always searching, for that greener grass on the other side of the fence, searching for the ideal partner, searching for the best friends, searching for the best holiday resorts, searching for the best jobs, with the biggest salaries, the best coffee shops, the best clothes, the best cars, the best pets……………….. it feels as though we spend our whole life searching....................but if we are honest with ourselves we never find what we are searching for, because we are not looking in the right places, we are not looking inside ourselves ............. what we are really searching for cannot be bought at a shop, cannot be traded, cannot be earned........ to find out who we are, where we fit in, what we believe, where are lives should be going…….
we have to look inside, we have to look at who God wants us to be, we have to find out what, gifts and talents God has given us, and in doing that, when you are using you gifts, when using your talents to the glory of our Father .....................you will find the "more' that you are searching for ........... because there is no " more" in life than doing what God has asked you to do............

Valentine
Today sitting here without a Valentine so to speak, i started to wonder how, when and why this tradition started so did some investigating.................
Several tales have taken root as the cultural heart of Valentine's Day, most of which stem from the patron Saint Valentine.
One legend describes a priest named Valentine who lived during the third century in Rome. The Roman Emperor Claudius II was building up a military at the time and supposedly thought single men would make better soldiers. To build a stronger army, the emperor outlawed marriage for young men. Feeling this sweetheart ban was unjust, Valentine apparently performed secret marriage ceremonies. When found out, legend has it the love priest was put to death.
Valentine's name was not associated with romantic and courtly love until the 14th century, when Geoffrey Chaucer incorporated St. Valentine's Day into his love poem "The Parliament of Fowls," according to Philip Florio, assistant to the vice president of student life at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia.
The ensuing Valentine's Day has been linked with heroism and romantic love for centuries. Flowers, candies and syrupy-sweet cards help men and women profess their love for one another.
In 1868, Richard Cadbury released the first Valentine's Day box of chocolates, followed in 1902 with the first "conversation" hearts from the New England Confectionary Company. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland created the first commercial Valentine's Day cards in the United States. In 1913, the Hallmark Company produced its first Valentine card.
Now that you are all educated in why we celebrate Valentines day, i would just like to wish you all a great day, as gory as the history of it might he, all that beheading and stuff. What I will say is that we are all need to be loved, we all need our hearts to miss a beat when that special person comes into the room........ never stop looking until you find that person never settle for second best ................ you are the only one who will pay in the end ........... because to go through life with out true love, is like salt without pepper, a sunflower without the sun, a canary without a song, a child without laughter, never take the risk of looking back and realising that you never really knew what life was ................ it is just too short .............
