Autumn

On  the  way  home  from  work  this  week  my  eldest  daughter and  I were  chatting and she  asked  me  when was the  beginning  of  Autumn,  after  some  debate,  we  determined  that, summer  was in  fact  almost  over  and that  the  first  of  March,  was  probably  the  official  first  day  of  Autumn,  she  unlike  me  does  not  like  the   cold  weather,  she  is  a true  "Africa"  child,    born  and  bred, she basks  and  grows  in  the  warmth  of  the  sun.
This  morning  as  I  sit  on  my patio, drinking  my  first  cup  of  tea, and  perhaps  just  a little  bit  contemplative,   I  feel without  a  doubt  that  there  is  no longer the  freshness of  the  morning air,  that  the  seasons  are  definitely  changing  because   there  is  now  a  chill in  the  breeze  a  warning  that  summer  is over ............. and  as  I go  back  inside  to  get  a  jersey,  I  realise  that  we  were  right and  that autumn  is  on  its  way........................
As  I  sit  here,  enjoying  the  still of  the  morning,  and  look  beyond  the lines  of  parked  cars,  that  have now  taken  over  my garden  like  an  unwanted   fungus,   grass  eating  beasts  that  look  ugly  and  threatening,  as there   numbers multiply almost  on  a  weekly  basis,  and  no  matter  what  I  do,  and  how  much  I complain  they  just  keep  on  coming,  blue  ones,  white  ones,  beige  ones,  silver  ones,  green  ones....................  they  are   taking over  the  garden,  like  an  unwanted  visitor  that  just  does  not  get  the  message  that  they  have  outstayed  there  welcome,  and  they  should  all leave  and  find  another  place  to  ruin  with  there ugliness...............
I  sit  and look  beyond  this   silent  ugly  cemetry of  dead  cars  at  the  trees,  I  love  to watch and  listen to  the  birds,   sitting  in the  branches  singing,  singing  I  am  sure  of  there  joy and  happiness,   at  there  gift  of   another  new  day,  the joy  at  the  rising  sun,  flying  from  tree  to  tree,  perhaps  to  see if  the  view  is  better  from  one  of  the  higher  trees, chasing  each  other  as  they  enjoy  the  tranquility of  the  early  morning.
The  trees,  still  a  dark  shade  of  green on the  outside  but   as  the  breeze  stirs  there  leaves,  there  is  a  shower  of  golden  leaves  cascading  to  the  ground........ falling  slowly,  almost  sadly  as  they  realise there time  has  come  that  they,  have  given  up  there  birth  right,  the  right  to,   to  be  part  of  the  majestic  tree,   in  fact  as  I  look  around  I  see there  are in  fact   leaves  everywhere,  and  realise  that  nature  is  getting  ready  to  begin  its  yearly hibernation..............  autumn  is  on its  way.

Autumn  is  a  time  I  look  forward  to,  the  trees  are  dressed  in  the most  amazing  colours, reds,  yellows,  golds,  browns and  oranges,  a vista  of  vibrancy  as  they  show  off  there  last  beauty  before  all the  leaves  are  blown  off.  autumn,   natures  way  of  resting,  so  that  it  can  come  back  in  all its  beauty  in  spring,  it  is  natures  way  of  renewal,  revival,  affirmation  that there  is  a  cycle  of   life  that   goes  on  no  matter  what.......................

We can all learn  a  lesson  from  trees,  we  like  them,   need  to  take   time  out  to rest,  we  need  to  look  at  our  lives,  in  what  are  our  roots  anchored,   how  deep   do  our roots  go,  are  those  roots  so  deep  that they  can  withstand  the  onslaught  of  droughts,  storms  and  winds,   are  those  roots  so  deep  that  they  go  so  far  down  to  find  the  best  sweetest,  freshest  water  to  feed  them,  do  you  know  where  your  roots  are  getting  there  water  from............... we  need  to  think  about where we  came  from  where  we  are  going,   we  need  to   get  rid  of  our  dead  leaves,  prune  the  dead  branches,  fertilize with  the  best  word,  and  be  born  again  as  the  people  that  we  were  destined  to  be...................  the person  God  designed  you  to  be ........................

Summer

Our  minister  always  says  that  God  puts  you  in  the  place  that  you  are  supposed  to  be,  and  it  is  we  humans  who  choose  to  roam  around  the  world.  I  was  born  in England, wet,  damp,  dreary  England,  land  of  indoor  pools,  indoor  soccer,  indoor cricket, indoor  everything,  green, cold,  snowy   England .................  my  parents  chose to transplant  us  all  when  I  was  just  8 years  old,  to  this  land  of  sunshine, braaivleis,   and  sweltering  summers,  hot  Christmas's  something  that  today  42  years  later
I  am  still not  used  to ...................
Although  I love  the  sun,  and  can  understand  why  people  in  England  get  depressed when  they  have  not  seen  it  for  month,  I  really  just  cannot  cope  with  the  heat  and  the  older  or  should  I say  more  mature,  I  get  the  more  I  feel the  heat,  people  laugh  when  I  tell them  that  one  day  I  am  going  to  self  combust  from  the  heat  and  the  only  thing  that  will be  left  of  me  will be  a  pair  of  smoking  shoes.

The  heat  of  a  sweltering  summer  day is something   I can  pretty  much  do  with  out.........  I hate  the  feelings  of  rivers  of  perspirations  flowing  down  my  back  like the  Vaal River  in  full flood......  I  hate  the  feeling  of melting  makeup,  as  it  slithers  down  my  face............  I  hate  the  fact  that  no  matter  how  long  I  take  doing  my  hair,  it  continues  to  stick  to  my  head  like  a  flat  pancake ....................... I  hate  the  fact  that  no  matter  how  little  clothes  I  wear  at  the  end  of the  day  I  am   still hot  and  sticky...................   the  problem  is  I   think  that  you  can  dress up  for  winter, and  as  the  day  warms  off  you  begin  taking  off the  layers   but  there  is  no  way  you  can  dress down  for  summer........  because there  is  only so  much  skin  that  you  can  decently  leave  uncovered ................
NO   amount  of  fans  or  air conditioning  is enough  to  keep  me  cool ........  i  was  just  not  designed  for  this  weather .................
I  was  designed  to  be  in  a  cold  place,  with  lots  of  rain,  sleet  and  snow ...................

I  love  the  early  mornings  in  Summer   when,   before  it  is  light  i  sit  outside  on  my  patio,  having  a  cup  of  tea,  blogging,  and  watch  the  sun  come  up..........  I  love  the  cool  of  the  Spring  and  Autumn  mornings  and  evenings ................. but more  than  that  I  love   the  cold,  crisp   mornings  of  Winter,  i  love  it  when  you  breath  out  and  your  breath  hangs  in  the  air, like  unspoken  words,  like  a cloud of  air , hovering  about  the  ground,  not  knowing  itself  where  it  is  supposed  to  go.........
I  always  tell people  that  I  should  have  been  born  to a  family  of  Eskimo's  not  only  can  I  picture  myself  living  in  an  igloo,  cuddled  under  some  animals  fur,  feeling  all toasty ,  I  really  like  the  idea  of  whenever I  want  something  to  drink,  I go  outside  and  grab  a glass  full of  snow,  and  make  my  own,  natural  slush  puppie,   straight  from  nature............    yes  i  know  that  God  knew  what  he  was  doing  when  he  gave  me  to  a family  in  a  cold,  wet,  snowy place................

Time

Do you  know  where  you're  going  to do you  like the  things  that  life  is  showing  you,  do  you  get  what  you're  hoping  for  when  you  look  behind, and  there's  no  open  door, do  you  know  where  you're  going to..................................................

This song  has  been  going through  my  head  all day  today,  and  I'm  not  quite  sure  why,  I  think  I  realised  today  that  no  matter  who  you  are........  rich,  poor,  young,  old,  fat,  thin,  tall,  short  that in  one  way  we  are  all alike,   there  is  no  difference,  the  paths we  chose  to  take  might be   different,  the mountains  we  climb  might  be  bigger,  the  oceans  we  need  to  swim  might  be  deeper  but  we  are  all  searching  for  something................
There  are  only  two  things  that  you  are  guaranteed of   in  this  life, the  first  thing  is,  that  your  life  will constantly  change, that  just  as  you  think  that  you have  everything  under control and  that  every thing  is  perfect,  someone,  somewhere,  somehow,  will throw  you  a  curve  ball, and  you will  have  to start  all over again,  trying  to have  the  "perfect  life".
The  second  certainty in  your  life  is   that  one  day  you  will have  an  appointment with  God,  that  no  matter  how  hard  you  try,  or  how  much  you  might  want   to,  because  you  know  you  are  not  ready, you  cannot  postpone it,  you  cannot  be  late  for it ,  you  cannot change  the  venue  of,  it  is  an  appointment  that  you  need  to  spend  your  life  making  sure  that  you  are  ready  for .................
Once  a  long time  ago  a  minister  said  something  that  really has  stayed  with  me  all these  years,  he said
That  he hopes  that  there  is  no  heaven,  because otherwise  there are  so many people  that  he  loves  that  he knows  will not make  it there,  but  just  in case  there  is,  he  is  going  to make  sure that  he  spends  his  whole  life  making  sure  that  he  gets in............... that  his  name  is  written  in  the  Book  of  Live ...................... and  we  will be  the  example  that brings  other  people  to the  Lord,  and hopefully that  will include  those  he  loves.
How  many of  us  just  exist  day to  day,   not knowing  where we  are going,  not  seeing  the  open  doors  showing  us  the  way,  not  seeing  the way,  the  right  path,   until  it is  to  late  and  the  door  is  closed  because  we  took  so  long  to  make the decision  to  go  through  it,  because  we   are  so programmed  to  look  only ahead,  not  look  at all  the possibilities  around us,  some people  are  so  focused  on  life  that  they  don't get to chance to live,  they  don't  notice  the  sunsets,  and  sunrises,  don't  notice  the  rainbows,  don't  notice  the  smell  of  the  approaching  storm  or  the  smell  of  fresh  cut  grass.............. the  laughter  of  young  children,  the  bonds  of  friendship,  they  are  so  busy  trying  to  find "something"  that  they  don't  see  that  that  "something"  is  all around  us everyday  in  Gods  creation...............  God  knows  what  the  bigger  picture  is....................  you  don't  need to  know,  because  it  is  out  of  your  hands  anyway ................  and  with  God  as  you  light,  as  your  guide,  there  will always  be  open  doors,  there  will always  be  hope,  that  will always  be  answers  to problems ................. Knock  and  the  door  will be opened ..........................

The "Grand Canyon" long drop

Of  all the destructive natural forces there are,  water  must  be  the  most  destructive, fire can  be put  out, wind damage  avoided by battening  down  the  hatches  so to speak, but  water  you  cannot  control, you  cannot  stop  it,  cannot  redirect  it  it has  a  will and  a  power  all of  its  own.
We  over  the  past  two  months  have  had  more  than  our share  of  rain,  it  is  almost  like  someone,  somewhere  turned  on  the  tap,  and  has  just  forgotten  to switch  it  off, so  right  now  i think most  of  us in  Gauteng   are at  water  over load  .................
A  few  weeks  ago  I  blogged  about  a  "puddle"  we  have  in  our  garden,  well  a  friend  of  mine  said  something  along  the  lines  that from  the  photo it  was  just  a  "puny"  little  puddle,  and  well looking  at  the  photo I suppose  she  has  a  point,  what  I  didn't  mention  was  that the  picture  had  been  taken  some  time  after  the  storm,  and  so  the  water  had  begun  to sink  into  the  ground   already,  but  here  is  a  photo  of  the  puddle  right  after  the storm .
See  best  friend  it  is  almost  a  minature  dam ..............

This "little"  dam  is  however not  the  only "addition " to  our  garden  because  of  the  rain ......  we  have  another  interesting  addition.  Our house  is  just  over  100 years  old and  at  sometime  in  its  historical  past it  must  have  had  a long drop  toilet just  outside  the  back  door, obviously the  people did  not  want  to  walk  far  to  do  the  "deed" ...........  nor  did  they  want  to  get  wet  when  it  was  raining when  they  really  had  the  "need".. ........... so they  put  this  long  drop  almost  right  outside  the  back door.
With  all this  rain  we  noticed  that the  ground  had  begun  to  look  a  little  concave,  by  about  day  3  of  the  continual  rain,  the  ground  had  dropped  about  30cm,  and  by  about  day  5  we  were  at  about  a metre,  and  at  about  day  7 the  whole  was  deep  enough  for  our  labrador,  to  jump  into  and  you  could not  see him  at  all because  of  the  depth  of  the  hole.

Now  my  mind  began  to  "work"  overtime,  how  long  is  a  long  drop,  how  much  can  this  new  garden  addition  "grand  canyon"  still drop..............  do  we  dig  down  and  have  a  look  before  we  fill
it ........................  what  kind  of treasures  would  we  find  down  there....  i  mean  just  think of  all the things  that  you have  thrown  down  the toilet,  not  to  mention  what  you  have  accidentally lost  down  the toilet, the  jewelry,  the  false  teeth,  the cell phones .............
By now my  imagination  was  at  full throttle,  what  if  a  serial  killer  had  lived  in  this  house,  and  all the  bodies  had  been  thrown  in  there  and  we  would  find  all the  bones ........  what  at  times  when  the  house  was  occupied someone  or  something  had  fallen down  the hole  and  now because  of  the "toxic" waste  that  was down  there  have  become  super  strong   and  just  waiting  like   the  Genie  in Alladdin  to  be  let  loose  on an  unsuspecting  world ...........  what  if  a  miserly  previous  owner   had  used  it  as  a  storage   area  for  all  his  millions ..................................  what  if  the missing  Kruger Rands  are  buried  down  that  hole .....................  and  what  if...................  what  if  it  is just  a  long  drop ..................

Vaal Dam

On  Saturday  my  family  and  I  took  a  drive  out  to  the  Vaal  Dam  Wall,  14  sluice  gates  were  open,  the  first  time  in 15  years  that  so many  sluice gates  have  been  open all at  once,  as  we  approached  the  dam  we  were amazed  at  just  how  full the  dam  was,  places  where   we  have sat and  had  picnics,  were  completed  submerged  by  the water,  the  launch  pads  for  the  boats  which  are  normally  a nightmare  to  reverse  down  because  of  the  distance  to  the  water  edge,  have  disappeared  under the  ever  rising  dam,  due  completely by the  pure  volume  of  rain  that  has  fallen  over  the  past  2  months.  In  some  places  the  dam  was  lapping  at the  roads  edge, something I  have  never  seen  before.
From  far  you  could  see the  mist  created  by  the  water  pouring out  of  the  dam  wall  at  a  rate  of over   100 000  litres  per  second  into  the  Vaal  River,  but  nothing  could  prepare  you  for  the  beauty  of  the  falling  water,  the  white  water  gushing  out of  the  walls,  like  a  garden  water  fall,  but  a  million  times  bigger  and  a  billions  times  more  water,  as the  water  hit  the  river  bed,  it  exploded into  a  white cloud of  water  that  sent  the  water  flying  metres  up  into  the  air..............  the noise  level  was amazing  as  the  water  thundered  out  of  the middle  of  the  wall ....................beautiful ...........

The  normal  slow  flowing  Vaal   River  was  an enormous   raging river  of  about  5  times  its  normal  width,  and  flowing  so fast  that  it  had  already  taken with it,  most  of  the vegetation  on  the  sides,  as  well as  all the  fencing  which  ran  across a  small workers  road  which  was  just  under  the  bridge  we  were  standing  on.
As  you  looked down stream,  you  could  see  the  garden  lapa's  of  the  houses  close  to  the  river  and  all that  was  showing  was  the  thatched  roofs,  and  it  made  you  realise  why there  had  been  so much  flooding  down  steam,  how  hundreds  of  houses  were underwater  and  the  water was  still rising.
But  watching  the  force  of the  water also  made  me  think  of something else .............. some  of  the  willow  trees that  were  now  almost  fully  submerged  were fighting  against  the  flow  of  the  water,  fighting  against  the  onslaught  of  the volume  of  the  water,  it  made  me  realise  as  Christians  that  is  what  we  need to do  we need  to stand  firm  in  our  Christianity  against  the  world,  against  all that  we  know  is  not  right,  against  all the  temptations  that  are  daily  put  in our  paths,  if  that  thin  little  willow  tree  can  do  it  then  we  should  really  have  no  trouble  at  all ..................and  certainly  not  a  single  excuse  that  i can  think of ........................

You're Worth It

Because You're Worth It
There is  an  advert  for  a  cosmetics  company, which  always  shows  some glamorous  star or  another,  convincing  you  to buy  there  products,  and  at  the  end  when  they  have  told  you  of  the  benefits,  of   how it  has  changed  their  lives  by  making  them  more  beautiful,  their  hair shinier,  their  eye  lashes  longer,  their  lips  more  kissable.......  they  end  by  telling  you  to do  this with  the words  .........  Because  You're  Worth  It.........
Yesterday  I was  very  extravagant  I had booked  an  afternoon  at  the  Spa, my  two  daughters  and  I  went  off for  an  afternoon  of  pampering...............  at  the  La  Dolce Vita  Day  Spa  and  that  is  exactly  what  we got................

Our  appointment  was  at  12.30  and  to my  horror  of  horror's  I  was  2  minutes  late,  we  had  underestimated  the distance,  and  no  matter  how  we  tried  we  just  could  not  make  up  the  two  minutes  reflected  on  the  Garmin, which  showed   as  our arrival  time, 12.32pm  no  matter  how  fast  we went,  we  were  stopped  by traffic  lights,  we  were behind  every  Granny with  a  hat on,  and  every  slow  truck  in  South Africa  had  decided  to  be  on  the  road at  exactly  that  time,  so  12.32pm was  our  estimated  time  of  arrival  and that  is  exactly  the  time  we  arrived ........................
We  were  greated  by  a  lovely young  lady called  Shanie,  long  flowing  black  hair,  a  soft  voice like  falling  rose  petals,  and  a  friendly smile,  she  welcomed  us  in,  hugged  my  two  daughters  because  they  had  been  there  before after  my  daughers  paper  party  late  last  year,  in  fact  when  I had  made  the  booking  I  asked  if  she  remembered  our  previous  booking,  and  her  reply was ..............  and  I quote .................
Yes,  she  remembers  my  daughters, one  was  getting married  and  one  never  stopped  talking ............
We  had  some  muffins  and  some  fruit juice  and  the  pampering  began........................ I started  with  the  pedicure,  and laying  back on  the  chair,  listening  to the  music  in the  background  which  was in its self  an  experience,  the  lapping  of the  ocean,  the  tinkling  of  tiny bells,  the  soft dulcid  tons  of  the  pan pipes, the  muted sounds  of  the  dolphins, probably mating  but  who  knows ,  and  in  minutes  I  could  feeel  myself  relax,  I could  feel  the  tensions  of  the  week  easing  out  of  my  bones.................... ...       I  almost  could  forget  that  someone  was  working  on  my feet  which  for  those  who  know  me  know  is  my biggest  "phobia", the  only noise  was  my  youngest daughter  laughing  in  the  room  next  to  me,  as  she  kept  her  audience  entertained..............
Then  it  was  the  turn  of  my hands.........................  could  anything  be  nicer  than  this, I wondered  what  was  going  on  next  door,  because  it  was  very  quiet,  i  discovered  later  that  they  were  having  their  facials,  and  it  was  so  relaxing  that  even  my  youngest  daughter  forgot  to  talk ........... now  that  is  amazing .............. the owner  of  the  Spa  came  to  check  on us and  paid  me  a  really  nice  compliment  and  I quote......

You have  two  amazing  daughters,  and if  I ever  have  a  daughter  I  will send  her  to you to bring  her  up...............
Then  it  was  time  for  my  facial .....................  the  room  was  filled  with  the  smells  of  cucumbers ,     of  vanilla,  of    brown  suger,  of strawberries,  of  rose  petals   and  of  warm honey..........  all of  which  they  has  used  at  some point  during  the treatments ..........well  what  can  i  say .....................  at  one  point  my own  "snoring"  woke  me  up,  it  was  so relaxing  that  I  fell  asleep ..................
We  finished  off the  day  with  the  vibrator  to  get  the  fluids  going,  which  had  apparently  now  all been  disturbed  by  all the  masaging.......we  had  an  amazing  desert  and some freshly  brewed coffee  and  we  were ready to  go  home ..............
As  we  were  leaving  Shanie  said,  come  back  soon.....  and  I  made  up  my mind  there  and  then  that  I  was  going  to  do  exactly that  i  was going to  go  back  soon ..............    we  are  going  to do this  again,  even  if  we  have  to  cut  back  on  something else,  because  we  need  to  look  after ourselves,  we  need  to  pamper  ourselves,  we  need  to  stop  thinking  of  reasons  why  we  shouldn't  be  doing  this,  thinking of  better  ways  the  money  could  be  spent,  we  need  to  stop justifying  every  cent   we  spend  on  ourselves................................  and  why ................................

Free Falling

Have you  ever  had  the  dream when  you  are standing  on  the  edge  of  a  mountain.......................

.........looking  out  over  what  seems  to be  an  unending  landscape, you  know  it  is  a  long  way  down,  you can  see the  cows below  looking  like  tiny  ants standing  out  against  the green  grass,  the trees  look  like small bushes,  and  the  streams  look  like  pieces  of  ribbon  thrown  over the  landscape and  yet  as  much  as  you  don't  want  to.........  as  much  as  your  head  is  telling  you  to stop...  it  feel  like  your  body  has  a  mind  of  its  own,  and  it  goes  right  ahead and  takes  that  last  step,   that  step  over  the  edge, and  for  that  split  second  you  are  flying  through  time  and  space ......  and  then  you  wake  up  with  a  jolt................
Why  is  it  that  is only  in  our sleep  we  are  so brave,  it  is  only  in  our sub-consciousness that  we allow  ourselves to take  chances,  we  allow ourselves  to  take  that  leap of  faith into  the  unknown..............
In our  dreams  we  are  able  to  live  our hopes,  our  desires  and  our inspirations,  we  are  able  to  do anything  we  want  to  because  there  is  no  risk,  there  is  no  embarrassment,  we  can never  fail,  and  no one  can  ever  tell us  we  can't to  it ...................................

We  are  all born  WINNERS  but we  are  conditioned LOSERS  ( Noreen Hart)

This  is  the  saying  of  a really special  friend  of  mine,  that  when  we are  born,  we  have  endless  potential,  there  is  no  limit to  what  we  are  able  to achieve,  the  sky  is  the  limit  there  is nothing  that  we  cannot  do, there  is  nothing that  is outside  the realm  of  possibility,  and  yet  as  we  grow  up  we  are  told  by  our  parents,  the very  people  who  are  trying  to  give  us all that  they  can, the  very  people  who would go  to  war  for  us, it  is  our own  parents  that instill  in  us  the  belief  that  we  can't  do things,  we  can't do  this, we  can't  do that,  as  a  child the  second  word  we  learn  after  "Dada" is  NO.....  our  parents  spend  the first  years  of  our  lives saying   NO........ NO  don't  touch that,  NO  you  can't  drink that,  NO  you  can't  play  here,  NO  you can't  have  sweets, NO  supper is  in  a few  minutes........... NO  your  to young,  NO  your  to old....................    NO NO NO NO NO.

But  the  bible  teaches  us  that  in  God  all things  are  possible, in  him the  only  limitation  to what  we  can achieve  is,  our  own  dreams  and  desires,  and  if  we  had  true  faith............... we  would  not  worry  about tomorrow,  we  would  not  worry  about  what  other people  think,  if  we  had  true  faith   we  would  jump  of the  cliff  of  life  without  a  second  thought,  because  our  Father  will be right  there  beside  us,  holding  our hand   because we  are  His   children  and  He  is  the  only person who  will never let  us  down,  and  no  matter  what  we  can rely on HIM .................  take  the  leap  of  faith...............
